Give your Front Porch a Fall Facelift

Welcome visitors with fall style

Happy to be featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Sunday “Embracing Autumn—Fall under the season’s spell.” Here are some pictures and excerpts from Alison Sherwood’s article, Give your Front Porch a Fall Facelift to which we contributed.

Going natural

“Fall is the best time to show nature’s bounty,” said Deb Fowler, florist and owner of The Flower Lady Inc., in Wauwatosa. “In floral design, this is the best time to rock all the textural items you have.”

Natural botanical porch design in three steps

If you're overwhelmed by the task of decorating your front porch for fall, try this method from florist Deb Fowler for keeping things simple and unified.

STEP ONE: Choose one material for all containers: Wood, metal, woven fibers, ceramic, clay

STEP TWO: Choose three to four items, each from a different category below:

Harvest bounty: pumpkins, gourds, squash, corn, berries

Linear elements: twigs, branches, vines, dried grasses, dried corn stalks, rose hips, driftwood

Geometric elements: Spheres, hexagons, triangles, arrows, cubes, orbs

Plants: mums, begonias, succulents, green shrubs, ornamental cabbages, ferns, dried flowers like hydrangeas

Natural items: rocks, pine cones, vine Orbs, leaves

Candles: any shape or size

STEP THREE: Using various shapes, sizes or types of containers made from your chosen material, combine in various ways your chosen three or four items, in mass groupings or on their own.
